About Felician Mission: Haiti

Praise the Lord! We thank our God for everyone who has prayed for and supported our efforts as we continue our journey in Jacmel, Haiti. We have been here since 2012 and so many good things have happened that we wanted to share a few stories with you! We live among the marginalized and those living in poverty, accompanying them through the challenges and celebrating the joys of life. Join us on our journey and please keep us in your prayers as we keep you in our prayers.

Polyanna recycles in Haiti

We met an interesting Haitian woman, Polyanna Domond, an artist and a recycler. Her story is very interesting. She is the daughter of a former ambassador for Venezuela. She knows several languages and was a TV announcer for Haiti before and up until the earthquake in 2010. Polyanna was married and had children but, on that day in January, she was driving home from work while her family was in their home in Port au Prince. Seventeen family members were killed, including her husband and children.

After the earthquake, Polyanna was frantic, but she put her energy into helping those who were injured and were trying to survive. Years later, she has tried to rebuild her life and home. Now has moved to an area outside of Jacmel where she recycles plastics and old tires and makes them into art pieces. She builds walls and is now in the process of building a home out of recyclable plastics. She has an amazing story. With her artwork and recycling, she runs a “bed and breakfast” that is on the Caribbean Sea, not too far from where we live.

Polyanna helps other Haitian artists who use recyclable plastics and styrofoam to create things. We met a young man, Nelson, who was in prison and has learned how to make hand bags from used cement bags and plastic bottles. Now he is trying to make something of himself in order to take care of his family. As you can guess, Polyanna is helping him.

Challenges of going back to school

By the looks of these photos, it seems so simple to have our kids get back to school. Colorful uniforms, with pretty ribbons and barrettes in their hair, do not show the real situation that each of these kids has to face. Everyone in Haiti has to pay to go to school. They need to have money to pay for tuition, a uniform, shoes, books, back pack and school supplies. Each of these is very expensive. Everyday we have people coming to our door, asking for these items and for help to pay for their child to go to school. We are helping “our” families, those whose homes we have visited and we know their individual situations. We have heard that the President of Haiti is having some of the National Schools open free for the poor. We have not yet seen that happen here in Jacmel.

Sr. Charlotte meets our neighbors

Sr. Charlotte and Sr. Inga visited the family that lives across the street. Sr. Charlotte could not believe that people can live in such conditions. The sisters took the youngest kids to our house to feed them and wash them.

Sr. Andrew works with Klinik Manman Angela in Kap Wouj

Sr. Andrew worked on Wednesday with the Manman Angela Klinik team in Kap Wouj. She worked with our pharmacist, Rosemanie, in preparing medications for all the patients. Sr. Andrew met 32 patients and even tried to speak a few words with everyone in Creole!

Haitian Birthday Party

On Sunday, September 7, we were invited to the birthday party of our two priests, who are our neighbors, living on the third floor of our building. Sisters Charlotte and Andrew had the opportunity to try real Haitian food. It was an additional joy for us because we did not need to cook.

Klinik Manman Angela goes to Bwa Béf

Yesterday Sister Mary Charlotte from Lodi, NJ, and Sister Mary Andrew from Beaver Falls, PA, arrived in Jacmel to help us in the mission for two weeks. Today they came with us for Mass in Bwa Bef, where we needed to speak with the people about Klinik Manman Angela, which would be coming to this area to serve the poor. The people have no church so the Mass was in front of someone’s home. This is where the clinic will take place for the people in this area who otherwise have no access to medical care. After Mass, we spoke to the people about the clinic that will come every two weeks. Now the clinic is going to eight places where the poor can be served. Mesi Bondye mesi! Thank you, God! We also thank our benefactors who help us and support the clinic.

A chance to get a physical

On Friday, September 5 our young children and teens were able to have a physical in the Klinik Manman Angela with our team. Some of our kids have respiratory illnesses and infections that were not discovered before. We thank God for this opportunity to do this for them.
