On Tuesday, November 12, Dr. Jean Paul Bonet arrived at the Felician Haiti Mission. His eyes were filled with amazement as he saw the mission for the first time after it was dedicated a year ago. He is here working with Rotary International on a few projects. He also had the opportunity to meet with the Mother Angela Clinic Team. Here he is sharing with our Director, Dr. Yves Derisier, MD.

“[…] the US Embassy and the rest of the international community must not continue to support the Head of State […] the opposition has already launched 7 days of national mobilization from Sunday 27 October to Saturday 2 November 2019 to force President Jovenel Moïse to step down.

We are maintaining our schedule and recall that the country will be totally closed during this period of intensive mobilization. We call on the international community to join the Haitian people in their fight for the satisfaction of their legitimate demands.”

André Michel said that it is time to get down to business and that from October 27 to November 2 [week 7 of demonstrations and blockages], the country will be transformed into a real battlefield ‘democratic’, all roads will be blocked… “it will be a decisive week”.

On their side the four senators of the radical opposition [Evalière Beauplan (PONT); Antonio Cheramy aka “Don Kato” (VERITE), Ricard Pierre (Piti Dessalin) and Nenel Cassy (Famni Lavalas), involved in the looting and violence in the Senate continue to demand the resignation of the Head of State and announce a hardening mobilization from 27 to 2 November, encouraging their activists, supporters and sympathizers to mobilize more.

On September 30, we received a letter from our Bishops, stating their concerns for the country of Haiti and the need for peace and reconciliation; an end to the terrible violence that threatens the whole country; concern for the women and children; and a call to solidarity. They asked for the President to take a good look at the situation and have a dialogue with the people.

Each day, things seem to have escalated; and the violence has gotten worse. Another letter was sent on October 18 from the Conference of Religious in the country, inviting all Catholics to join in solidarity, especially in Port au Prince, to march for peace on Tuesday, October 22, the feast of St. John Paul II. As you can see from the videos and pictures, the march was peaceful as people of faith joined hands in prayer.

The people of Haiti love St. John Paul II. Today Catholics in Port au Prince are having a peaceful march. So we pray through the intercession of John Paul II to intercede for Haiti.

Today is the feast of St. Thérèse, the Little Flower. The heart of Thérèse’s spirituality was what she called the “little way.” As she wrote to a friend, Sometimes, when I read spiritual treatises in which perfection is shown with a thousand obstacles, surrounded by a crowd of illusions, my poor little mind quickly tires. I close the learned book which is breaking my head and drying up my heart, and I take up Holy Scripture. Then all seems luminous to me; a single word uncovers for my soul infinite horizons; perfection seems simple; I see that it is enough to recognize one’s nothingness and to abandon oneself, like a child, into God’s arms. Leaving to great souls, to great minds, the beautiful books I cannot understand, I rejoice to be little because only children, and those who are like them, will be admitted to the heavenly banquet.

Therese was simple and spoke of the Way of Love. She herself preferred to be faithful in “little things”-–every day opportunities for patience, humility, and kindness. In this way, she could count on Christ’s love for her to enable her to achieve holiness. At the same time, Thérèse had a great soul and was conscious of the world outside her convent. She felt a deep call to support the missionary activity of the church with her daily prayer and life of quiet fidelity.

The situation in Haiti is very difficult for our people, and yet the Word of God keeps assuring us that He is with us and shall lead and guide us. We need to put our trust in God and keep praying that the violence will stop. Yesterday, God gave us a little sign, a rainbow after a big storm. As we gathered with the teens, we recalled the scripture passages of God’s faithfulness to us and once again placed Haiti into God’s loving care.

On Saturday, September 28, even the midst of demonstrations and the current situation in Haiti, our children and their parents/guardians met for an important meeting with Fr. Samson, pastor of the Cathedral Parish. We work closely with our priests as we prepare our children for the sacraments. Fr. Samson met with everyone individually. Now the journey begins as we all grow in our relationship with the Lord and His Holy Church!
